The International Air Transport Association (IATA) halved its loss forecast for 2010 to US$2.8 billion (compared to the US$5.6 billion loss forecast in December 2009). The improvement is largely driven by a much stronger recovery in demand seen by year-end gains that continued into the first months of 2010. Relatively flat capacity translated into some yield improvement and stronger revenues.

As the recession sapped demand for travel, hotel operators got creative. They shut down restaurants, closed floors and even cut back on newspaper delivery to ride out the downturn.

European Cities Marketing (ECM) represents more than 100 major cities in 33 countries. An analysis of a representative sample of European cities conducted by the association shows that the European city tourism market has experienced a surprisingly fast recovery in visitor flows beginning in the second half of 2009.

The top seven remained unchanged from January 2010, with flights to New York remaining in position seven. Amsterdam moved up two places into 8th and Dublin moved up four places into 9th, likely due to more people booking cheap flights to Ireland for St Patrick’s Day.
